The web hosting giant, GoDaddy, reported an alarming data breach which saw details of almost 1.2 million customers exposed. Demetrius Comes, GoDaddy’s chief information security officer (in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission), said that the company detected unauthorized access to its system where customers' WordPress servers are managed. GoDaddy warned users that this kind of exposure could result in phishing attacks. In some cases, a customer's SSL (HTTPS) private key was exposed which can be abused to impersonate website services. The breach has resulted in several issues, and GoDaddy has received more than a million complaints so far. GoDaddy said that an unauthorized person used a compromised password to access the systems around September 6th. The breach was discovered on November 17th. It is not yet clear if the compromised password was protected with two-factor authentication or not. GoDaddy said that they are in the process of resetting customers' WordPress passwords, private keys and issuing new SSL certificates. GoDaddy has more than 20 million customers worldwide. Spokesperson of the company, Dan Race, declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.
